American GodsAmerican Gods by Neil Gaiman
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I liked it, really liked it. Witty, funny, very strange. A bit long and twisting and full of 'pointless' nonsense that gives it that strange otherworldly intangible feel. Would recommend highly. I did find the end very unsatisfying, not in the sense that Gaiman is obviously trying to bait you into reading the second one, but more so that Shadow's whole life has been torn upside down, he's lost so much and gained very very little, or gained a lot but in an intangeable dream way thats hard to weigh up. He doesn't get a satisfying ending, so the reader doesn't either.

The Virgin SuicidesThe Virgin Suicides by Jeffrey Eugenides
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Bro idek where to start. The collective “we” that tells the story makes you feel that you’re also building this strange para-social, one sided relationship with the girls. And at so many points they seem to be reaching out towards the boys, and then it’s sort of clear they either aren’t reaching at all or it’s entirely for their own amusement. The writing style is really captivating, and i think the tangents help the reader to better understand the mentality of the boys. I’ve seen some criticism saying that the writing style is “pretentious” is which i don’t think is true at all, all language is simple & i don’t think there’s anything that could be cut out without massively altering the story, (( i’ve read one review that suggested cutting out at least 100 pages, bffr )).

all in all, weird and gross and fucked up. I loved it.
